PlayStation Welcomes Cross-Platform Play With Open Arms, Starting With Fortnite
Sony PlayStation has finally seen the light regarding cross-platform play in general. Starting today, the company has launched a beta for cross-platform functionality, with its first gaming subject being the incredibly-popular battle royale third-person shooter Fortnite.
Here is the official statement from PlayStation president and worldwide CEO John Kodera.
“The first step will be an open beta beginning today for Fortnite that will allow for cross platform gameplay, progression and commerce across PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Mac operating systems.Â
We see the beta as an opportunity to conduct thorough testing that ensures cross-platform play is best on PlayStation, while being mindful about the user experience from both a technical and social perspective.
Today, the communities around some games have evolved to the point where cross-platform experiences add significant value to players. In recognition of this, we have completed a thorough analysis of the business mechanics required to ensure that the PlayStation experience for our users remains intact today, and in the future, as we look to open up the platform.”
At least that battle’s won. PlayStation has been on the fence regarding cross-platform play policy, most likely due to monetary and security reasons. Publishers like Bethesda and Psyonix pressured Sony and even demonstrated that the switch to turn cross-platform play on is easy to implement.
If you haven’t created an account for Fortnite on PS4 for fear of losing out to cross-platform play options, worry not for Sony has taken down that particular barrier.
