[Report] Sony To Buy Out Take-Two Interactive (Update)

Update (15 March): Sony confirmed to Bloomberg reporter Yuji Nakamura that there is no truth to reports that it will acquire Take-Two Interactive. So much for that.

Original story: In a piece of possible news that may upend gaming history to its core, Sony Corp. may own one of the biggest game publishers on the planet.

No, we’re not talking about Activision or Ubisoft. We’re referring to Take-Two Interactive. According to Wedbush Securities head of technology and media trading Joel Kulina (via Market Watch), the company’s stock climbed up 4.7% due to a rumour that Sony Corp. “is in advanced board level discussions to acquire Take-Two Interactive in a mostly cash deal”. There’s no confirmed year when this will happen though, assuming it’s even concrete in the first place.

What does this mean if this grain-of-salt news happens? Well, we may be seeing Rockstar Games and major Take-Two games being sole exclusives for PlayStation. We don’t see any other avenue around this; exclusive games sell consoles. Buying out a major publisher that has a ton of game developers under its wing means more exclusives.

Time will tell if this will bear fruit, but things may look up for the House of the Triangle-Square-X-O combo if it’s true.
