Here’s Everything We Know About Black Myth Wukong So Far

Last month, a game from a previously-unknown Chinese developer captivated the world with its incredible pre-alpha gameplay footage video. Gamers were impressed with the luscious visuals and exciting Soulsborne-like gameplay of Black Myth Wukong by Game Science Studio.

In an exclusive interview with IGN, the developer revealed more details and information about the game:

  • Black Myth Wukong has been in development for the past two years.
  • The game is planned for release within the next three years.
  • The game will be over 15 hours long.
  • There will be over 100 enemy types in the final game, including bosses.
  • Black Myth Wukong is designed to be a gritty take on Journey to the West, featuring a more complex and darker version of the legendary tale of Sun Wukong the Monkey King escorting a monk with a sacred scroll.
  • The area featured in the gameplay footage video is called Black Wind Mountain and it took six months to build.
  • The playtime of Black Wind Mountain is planned to be 30 to 60 minutes on normal difficulty. It will be one of the game’s earlier levels.
  • The demo is entirely playable and can be approached in multiple ways; including fighting enemies instead of transforming into a Golden Cicada to avoid them (as seen in the video), for instance.
  • The player can use a variety of different transformations during the Wolf boss fight; more than the one shown in the video.
  • Black Myth Wukong is the first of three planned Black Myth games, each one drawing on different Chinese tales.
  • The developer wants to create a Chinese Black Myth Universe, similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

There you have it, folks, everything we know about the game so far. We might not receive any more details and information for a long time. Game Science Studio co-founder Feng Ji said:

“We might go quiet for a long time because right now we need to settle down and finish the project.

It is a complete surprise that the trailer got so popular, but it’s also a challenge for our next reveal.

If we can’t make something that is even better than this trailer, we won’t show it to the rest of the world.”

The developer currently only has 30 people working on the game, but is planning to hire more to bolster development. Since the Black Myth Wukong video went viral, they have received over 10,000 resumes.

Powered by Unreal Engine 4, Black Myth Wukong is slated to release for PC and unspecified consoles. In the meantime, check out the gameplay footage of the game below:
