Thor: Love And Thunder Will Not Be Releasing In Malaysia

Sad news for Marvel Cinematic Universe fans in Malaysia.

Thor: Love And Thunder will be the first MCU movie that will officially not be shown in Malaysian theaters. GSC Cinemas made a Twitter post stating that the film will not be releasing in Malaysia.

Why, you may ask? There’s no official reason though there are a few theories after we bust out the spoiler warnings. It’s a shame really: it’s a pretty good MCU film. It’s no Thor: Ragnarok, but it’s entertaining and heartfelt nonetheless.

Head here to see what other movies are banned in Malaysia.

Why Thor: Love and Thunder Is Not Showing In Malaysia

We have a few guesses:

#1: There’s a bit in the show that portrays Thor’s rock friend Korg being gay and having a rock partner named Dwayne (heh), making babies when they hold hands and are near a chosen spot of lava. This is portrayed at the end; Korg mentioned his same-sex relationship during his bits with Valkyrie on the ship halfway in the film.

#2: There’s a lot of god-killing and denouncements of gods in the show. After all, the main antagonist is called Gorr the God-Butcher. There’s also the portrayals of gods and god-like beings, especially in the god planet Omnipotence city with mentions of orgies and gods being arrogant. If anything, the message about gods being irresponsible and aloof being the main bit of Thor: Love and Thunder’s story is enough to draw ire within Malaysia’s film approval body and other related government parties who do not find the movie’s tone and message appropriate.

Guess we won’t know the official reason, unless someone in Malaysia is willing to mention something off-the-record and risk his/her position.
