Square Enix Montréal Rebrands To Studio Onoma

Following the acquisition by Swedish company Embracer Group, the studio formerly known as Square Enix Montréal has rebranded as Studio Onoma.

Square Enix Montréal was founded in 2011 with the goal of developing premium games before switching its focus to free-to-play games in 2013.

It is the developer behind mobile games Hitman Go, Hitman Sniper, Lara Croft Go, Deus Ex Go, Hitman Sniper: The Shadows and Tomb Raider Reloaded, some of which was also released for PC and consoles.

Onoma is the Greek word for ‘name’ and “names offer endless possibilities”, the studio said on its website.

“Our strength has always been our ability to evolve and adapt to trends and market changes. Our rebrand as Studio Onoma is one more transformation that we are excited to take on.”

The mobile game developer is creating a new identity that will be “an umbrella to multiple products, programs, and initiatives.”

“We have built the Onoma brand to be flexible to see us into the future, connect with multiple audiences, and not hinder us from expanding with the market.”

A trademark application for ‘Studio Onoma’ filed in August led to speculation that it could be the name of a new western studio from Japanese Final Fantasy publisher Square Enix.

Embracer announced in May that it had agreed to acquire a large part of Square Enix‘s western development arm for $300 million, including Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal, Square Enix Montréal, and a catalogue of IPs including Tomb Raider, Deus Ex and Thief.

In August, Embracer called the studio the “soon to be renamed Square Enix Montreal.” According to Studio Onoma’s account, the studio created an in-house rebrand squad to create the updated name and brand profile.
