GSC Confirms Why Godzilla Minus One Is Not Showing In Malaysian Cinemas
Godzilla Minus One premiered in Japan on 3 November 2023 and in the US on 1 December 2023, but it hasn’t been released in Malaysia and other Southeast Asian countries. There have been many rumours and much speculation on the matter, but now finally local Malaysian cinema chain GSC Cinemas has confirmed the reason why Godzilla Minus One hasn’t been released in Malaysia and the rest of Southeast Asia.
According to a tweet by GSC Cinemas, the “film owners”, Toho, never had plans to release Godzilla Minus One in Southeast Asia in the first place.
Dear Godzilla fans:
To those asking for #GodzillaMinusOne, we heard you, and we’ve been trying. But there were no plans from the film owners to release the film in this region. ??
We are as disheartened as you are by this news – we are sorry and share in your disappointment!…

That being said, we still have no idea why Toho doesn’t want to release Godzilla Minus One in Southeast Asia. It’s weird, considering that the region has always had many fans of Japanese IP, and that includes Godzilla.
It looks like we’ll have to wait for the eventual streaming or physical release of the movie for those living in Southeast Asia.
Godzilla Minus One is the 30th live-action film in Toho’s long-running kaiju franchise after 2016’s Shin Godzilla.
The synopsis reads:
“In postwar Japan, a new terror rises; Godzilla. Will the devastated people be able to survive… let alone fight back?”
