Black Myth: Wukong has received rave reviews online from international publications due to the game’s graphics and action, with memorable boss fights to punctuate the experience. We played a couple of hours of Black Myth: Wukong, and we had fun with the action so far. The controls are tight, the skills Wukong has are plentiful and fits with the character and Chinese fantasy novel setting (spells and shapeshifting especially), and its cast of monsters and weirdos are memorable, at least from a visual and presentation standpoint.
The game’s levels in-between the boss fights could use a lot of work and creativity, but perhaps the game’s focus is solely on the one-on-one fights between the monkey warrior and his rogue’s gallery of snake-men, Chinese ogres, magic black bears, and dragons of multiple shapes and sizes. That said, the game pulls off the From Software bulls*** of having you fight hidden second forms of bosses after dealing with their equally-tough first forms, presumably as “gotcha” moments that come off as cheap were it not for the save point nearby.
Black Myth: Wukong is out now for PC and PlayStation 5.
