Asia Gaming Beat: 3rd May 2025

This week marks the end of April, with some news and updates in gaming catalogues most profound.

The Big Picture

The Until Dawn movie adaptation is a clear case of PlayStation Studios and Screen Gems fulfilling an obligation that they probably had no way out of. If they could, they probably would have cut their losses and killed the project.

In fact, the movie is a strong case for players to revisit the 2015 classic PlayStation 4 title, which is an interactive horror movie with third-person action-adventure controls and a clear focus on what it wants to be. Featuring strong faces and thespians like Hayden Panettiere and Rami Malek, it’s essentially a cinematic experience that still holds up until today, no remastering or remaking required.

PlayStation games to live adaptations have gone through quite a rollercoaster with The Last of Us series on HBO and Twisted Metal on Peacock. And while their experiments have been alright, they will eventually end up with a stinker or two. Still, that won’t be stopping anytime soon due to the lucrative potential of video game film adaptations.

Short Beats

Looter shooter title Borderlands 4 is releasing a few weeks earlier than its intended 23 September release date. The game is now coming out in 12 September.

Respawn is cancelling its Titanfall/Apex Legends spin-off. Its parent company EA has laid off 400 of its staff members.

Upcoming China-made action RPG Lost Soul Aside is postponed to 29 August so that it has more time to get fixed and polished.

Blizzard is reportedly working on an Overwatch mobile port, with the project being dubbed Overwatch 3. It’s also working on a new StarCraft entry, though its genre has yet to be confirmed.

Microsoft is raising prices on Xbox consoles, with games set to hit US$80 this year.

PlatinumGames game director Taura Takahisa has left the company, and is starting a new games company called Eel Game Studio. He was responsible for being a lead designer for Nier Automata and director for Astral Chain.
