Scott Pilgrim EX Ending Explained
This week marks the release of a new video game based on the Scott Pilgrim indie comic franchise: Scott Pilgrim EX. The game is really fun if you love River City Ransom/Girls-style RPG beat-em-up action that’s fast and action-packed.
But what really drives the series is the oodles of video game and pop culture references overloaded into its veins. Hell, the game features a lot of cameos from series creator Bryan Lee O’Malley’s past works and even some concept art that was shelved at the last minute.
In fact, one character from the Scott Pilgrim universe hasn’t seen that many appearances save for cameos; one that’s a fan favourite. I’m referring to Lisa Miller.
Scott Pilgrim EX has added her to the story, but I can’t say much because we’ll be delving into spoiler territory here; endgame stuff basically. You’ve been warned.
Who Is Lisa Miller?
Lisa Miller is an old friend of Scott Pilgrim back in high school. She appeared in a Scott Pilgrim flashback in Volume #2 and then makes a major appearance in Volume #4 as she visits Toronto, accidentally bumping into Scott and eventually catching up with him and Kim Pine.
She tried to romance Scott at one point in Volume #4 but they just stayed friends. She never made any other appearances in the comics since.
She appeared in the Scott Pilgrim VS The World: The Game back in 2010 as a shopkeeper and as part of the background but with pink hair. She also made a cameo appearance in a crowd watching the Scott Pilgrim play in the last episode of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. It’s a “blink and you’ll miss it” moment. So far she’s been nothing more than a cameo appearance.
That all changed in Scott Pilgrim EX. She appears initially as an NPC in Toronto, making appearances here and there with some extra dialogue when Scott, Ramona, and Lucas Lee talk to her.
She then appears in a high school outfit in two main story quests: the first one where you have to fight Super Simon Miller and the second where you have to play a simple volleyball minigame so that she gives you a Rift Riff to progress.
She also appears near the end where she and Young Neil’s sister Steph cheer you on as your band Sex Bob-omb open the rift to the future to deal with the trio of Baby G, Gideona, and Gordeon. From how they look and the company they own -G Corp- the three children are obviously the offspring of Gideon “Gordon Goose” Graves and Julie Powers’ from the future.
After a boss fight against a robot Gideon counterpart called Godeon, the three children repent and made things right in current Toronto. The band played the best show in Toronto, and each of the playable characters get their own happy ending. All’s well that ends well, right?
The final scene in the ending has the camera panning upwards ala Mega Man 2 intro, showing Metal Scott standing atop the tower. Metal Scott takes off the armour to reveal….none other than Lisa Miller!
Yes, Metal Scott is Lisa Miller from another dimension, disguised to help Scott Pilgrim and co. by playing the antagonist, as they’re the only ones who can help fix Toronto. Even the playable characters end up respecting and praising Metal Scott at the end when she’s beaten in the third fight at the defunct Chaos Theatre.
What Next?
Well, if Tribute Games has plans to make future DLC for Scott Pilgrim EX, having a playable Metal Scott/Lisa Miller with her own ending & extra dialogue would be pretty cool. Either that, or a bunch of new stages where you can only use Metal Scott; a prologue to Scott Pilgrim EX’s events.
Either way, it’s good to know that after years of being relegated to cameos, a fan favourite character finally gets the spotlight.
