The Green Knight Trailer Teases A Darker & Unique Arthurian Tale

David Lowery’s The Green Knight has finally received a new trailer after being delayed for a year since its original 29 May 2020 release date. The movie will now premiere on 30 July 2021.

What’s unique about The Green Knight is that Dev Patel’s Sir Gawain will be the main protagonist, distinguishing it from other Arthurian stories where King Arthur himself is usually the hero. It’s based on the poem “Sir Gawain And The Green Knight”, famously translated from Middle English by J.R.R. Tolkien in the 1920s.

The synopsis reads:

“An epic fantasy adventure based on the timeless Arthurian legend, ‘The Green Knight’ tells the story of Sir Gawain (Dev Patel), King Arthur’s reckless and headstrong nephew, who embarks on a daring quest to confront the eponymous Green Knight, a gigantic emerald-skinned stranger and tester of men.

Gawain contends with ghosts, giants, thieves, and schemers in what becomes a deeper journey to define his character and prove his worth in the eyes of his family and kingdom by facing the ultimate challenger.”

Seeing as this is a movie produced and distributed by A24 (the same studio behind movies like Ex Machina, The Witch, Hereditary and Midsommar), it has a sinister and dark tone. The trailer depicts giants who look like the Titans from Attack On Titans, giant axes and more medieval fantasy elements.
