Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Is PS5 Exclusive Because Of SSD Speed

Square Enix has claimed that its upcoming sequel to Final Fantasy VII Remake, which doesn’t come with a Part 2 subtitle, will need a bit more next-gen processing power of the PlayStation variety.

The JRPG-making company claimed that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is exclusive to PS5 and is skipping PS4 partly because of the company’s desire to exploit the new-gen console’s SSD capabilities (via Gamer). This is a far cry from FFVII Remake which was also on PS4 and also on PC. Game producer Yoshinori Kitase said there were several factors involved in the decision not to have the sequel on PS4.

“It’s exclusive to PlayStation 5 because of the graphical quality, of course, as well as SSD access speed. Since the adventure unfolds in a vast world after the escape from Midgar, loading stress is an extreme bottleneck. We felt we needed the specifications of PlayStation 5 to overcome that and travel the world comfortably.”

Why not release the game on the Xbox Series X since that console uses an SSD? It’s rather obvious: Square Enix and Sony had an exclusivity deal locked in for the Final Fantasy VII brand, thus it’s getting first dibs on the latest PlayStation console, just like back in the late 90s. See, Square Enix can still keep things consistent!

As showcased in an earlier trailer, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is part two of a planned trilogy, with the third game also having a subtitle that starts with the letter “R”.
