[Rumour] Washington Overwatch 2 Team Is Trying To Sell Its Players Due To Lost Of Trust In Overwatch League

A major Overwatch 2 team is planning on leaving the Overwatch League.

According to a number of sources (via GG Recon) the team Washington Justice is currently decreasing its competitive cost as it has lost confidence in the Overwatch League due to its uncertain financial prospects. The organization plans to sell all of its OWL players to recoup its losses, at least before the 18th August deadline hits. This downsizing will also affect the team’s staff and management; no players, no reason to host and manage a team, right?

With the trade deadline looming close, this along with the uncertainty of finances may work against the team’s current players. This may make some of the team’s lineup undesirable trade targets, even with their buyouts lifted; this is due to their possible ineligibility to play in the upcoming fifth OWL season. Any player that is released from their OWL contract will receive a minimum of 30-days of their annualised salary upon contract termination as severance.

Is the OWL in trouble? Well, the league has failed to attract new sponsors past its existing partnerships with companies like Upper Deck and TeamSpeak, following the lawsuit Blizzard has been hammered with. In addition, the league’s exclusive streaming rights deal with YouTube is also coming up for renewal and the game’s viewership numbers only saw a moderate increase despite the beta spiking momentarily for a few days. The game’s esports future may seem a bit rocky given the circumstances.

Overwatch 2 will be out as a free-to-play game on 4 October.
