Overwatch 2 New Users Will Have To Play 100 Matches To Unlock All Original Heroes

With Overwatch 1 shutting down on 2 October, it’s only a matter of time until the sequel takes over with its 5v5, new maps, and new free-to-play system. What could possibly go wrong?

A lot, it seems. First-time Overwatch 2 players will have to unlock old heroes by playing 100 matches. In addition, features like in-game chat and competitive mode will only be unlocked when said new players have met certain requirements. Hope you’re able to win 50 matches because that’s the only way to play competitive mode.

Blizzard is calling this gatekeeping “First Time User Experience”. See, this system is meant to gradually ease players into the game following consistent feedback from new Overwatch players. Here’s the company’s reasoning:

“This focused experience eases new players into the world of Overwatch by teaching them about different modes, rules, and other high-level aspects of the game in an approachable way. Most FTUE restrictions are lifted while in a group, so new players can team up with their friends at any time to play almost any game modes. Competitive is the exception to this rule because new players must complete a specific challenge to access this game mode.”

How are older players going to invite new players into their games and show them the ropes if they’re barred from basic features via this wall? It remains to be seen if this will play out positive or otherwise.

But Wait, There’s More!

Apparently, all Overwatch 2 players will be required to have a phone number attached to their Battle.net account. Here’s why:

“This additional layer of security is an industry-proven solution in combating both cheating and disruptive behaviour, further protecting your Overwatch 2 experience from bad actors.”

This also means that the company will be able to record voice chat and keep tabs on your account(s). So play nice, play fair, and let big brother Blizzard keep watching, eh?
