80s Dungeons & Dragons Cartoon Will Return As A Limited Edition Comic Series

Back in the 80s, the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop RPG title received a rather interesting cartoon adaptation that focuses on kids getting trapped in a fantasy world, fighting monsters led by evil overlord Venger and getting cryptic clues dropped by a venerable Dungeon Master. Basically it’s one of the earlier instances of a Western isekai. While the show lasted three seasons, the party was wiped due to declining ratings before the whole story reached a conclusion.

After 40 years, fans and animation aficionados will get a four-issue miniseries courtesy of IDW Publishing. The comic series will continue from where the 80s show left off. The comic book series will be written by David M. Booher(Canto) and Sam Maggs (Rick and Morty Ever After), while the art is done by George Kambadais(John Carter of Mars).

Here’s the synopsis:

“Hank has made a startling discovery: Despite the dangers, Sheila, Bobby, Diana, and the others aren’t so sure they want to go home after all!”

So far, the closest the series has been to an official resolution was a scripted finale via the production company Marvel Productions & D&D Entertaiment, recorded in radio play format for the show’s limited DVD release.  The comic will probably make up a new storyline that will make sense. Hopefully this quote from writer Sam Maggs will put fans’ mind to rest:

“As a lifelong D&D fan, it is an absolute dream to get to work reviving a childhood classic. It’s been such a blast working with IDW and the fine folks at Wizards of the Coast to home in on what made the Dungeons & Dragons Saturday morning cartoon such a cult favorite. Setting these characters up for a whole new run of stories has truly been a career highlight, and I hope fans will love seeing Uni (well…all our cool kids, but especially Uni) back in action as much as I do!”
