Sandbox Games Are Thriving Over Battle Royale Shooters On Mobile

Mobile games have been growing and growing, but the industry is a fickle one. New genres and games can live or die in an instant, with some fading into obscurity and some booming into popularity. According to statistics provided by analytics company data.ai, the mobile games landscape has changed over the past year.

Creative sandbox games such as Roblox and Minecraft dominate growth in many markets. Globally, time spent grew 25 percent from 2021 to 2022. In South Korea, usage in creative sandbox games grew by over 45 percent year-over-year. Conversely, battle royale shooter games were among the biggest ‘losers’ of 2022, with time spent declining by around 20 percent globally.

However, battle royale shooters are still relatively popular in certain markets, including China and Saudi Arabia.

Here are the top ten games according to number of hours spent by gamers worldwide:

  1. ROBLOX
  2. Fate/Grand Order
  3. Lords Mobile
  4. 8 Ball Pool
  5. MobilityWare Solitaire
  6. Pokémon GO
  7. JJ Doudizhu
  8. Ludo King
  9. Honor of Kings
  10. Free Fire

That’s right, ROBLOX is getting more and more popular, especially amongst the younger gamers. In addition, the statistics also show that well-known IP games such as Diablo Immortal and Apex Legends Mobile saw success in adoption and consumer spending, while Genshin Impact continues to break records, crossing its US$3 Billion in spending in Q2 2022.

The mobile games industry will only continue to grow, especially as console and PC games get more and more expensive.
