M5 World Championship – Day 5: Heartbreaking Eliminations & Emerging Favorites
By Lewis "lickety" Larcombe|December 7, 2023|0 Comment
After Day 5 of the M5 World Championship, only three slots remain. AP.Bren and Fire Flux Esports secured spots in the Knockouts, while Team Flash and RRQ Akira were eliminated.
Team SMG achieved their first win in the Philippines by defeating RRQ Akira 2-1, redeeming themselves. Despite a spirited fightback from RRQ Akira in Game 2, Team SMG found their footing and won Game 3, dashing the hopes of the already-eliminated Brazillian team. As a result, Fire Flux Esports claimed the second Knockout spot in Group B. Their match against Blacklist International will determine the group’s top spot.
In the following match, MPL Malaysia Season 12 champions, HomeBois, were shocked by Deus Vult 2-1, creating an open situation in Group D. HomeBois coach Khairul “Pabz” Sharif acknowledged the Russians’ excellence but admitted their own mistakes cost them the match. To secure their place in the Knockouts, HomeBois must defeat TheOhioBrothers on Day 6, with Geek Fam and Deus Vult closely observing.
ONIC Esports maintained a perfect M5 Group Stage record by sweeping See You Soon. The Sky Kings handed the Cambodian champions their first loss, solidifying their position as tournament favourites.
AP.Bren, another tournament favourite, delivered an outstanding performance in front of their home crowd, defeating Team Flash. Despite a slow start in Game 1, AP.Bren punished the MPL Singapore Season 6 champions and showcased dominance in Game 2, preventing Team Flash from securing any kills.
And as the group stage’s conclusion is on the horizon, there’s still plenty of room for upsets. So many “What if’s” are in the air, so what do you think will happen?
