NetEase And Blizzard Renew Partnership Bringing Popular Games Back to China
By Xandria Morden|April 10, 2024|0 Comment
A year and a half after a bitter breakup with NetEase, Blizzard and NetEase have finally come to terms, ending their feud. Games such as StarCraft, Diablo, Hearthstone and Overwatch will finally be returning to players in China. NetEase began publishing it games in China in 2008, and that deal ended just last year, ending a 15 year relationship between the two companies. This new deal will take effect this coming Summer.
“We at Blizzard are thrilled to reestablish our partnership with NetEase and to work together, with deep appreciation for the collaboration between our teams, to deliver legendary gaming experiences to players in China. We are immensely grateful for the passion the Chinese community has shown for Blizzard games throughout the years, and we are focused on bringing our universes back to players with excellence and dedication.” – Johanna Faries, Blizzard President.
“We are thrilled to embark on the next chapter, built on trust and mutual respect, to serve our users in this unique community that we’ve built together.” – William Ding, NetEase Chief Executive.
Rumours about the partnership being renewed surfaced when a photo was leaked showing NetEase CEO Ding Lei and new Blizzard president Johanna Faries meeting. Activision Blizzard has said that they value their Chinese market multiple times even after the fallout. Microsoft Gaming acquiring the company may be the reason NetEase is willingly renewing their deal.
“Blizzard and NetEase have done incredible work to renew our commitment to players—Blizzard’s universes have been part of players’ lives in the region for many years. Returning Blizzard’s legendary games to players in China while exploring ways to bring more new titles to Xbox demonstrates our commitment to bringing more games to more players around the world.” – Phil Spencer, Microsoft Gaming CEO
