Sega’s Golden Axe Game to be Adapted into Animated Series
By Alisha Alix|April 18, 2024|0 Comment
Sega is delving into its extensive iconic IP archives to bring the world an animated adaptation of its 1989 side-scrolling arcade beat-’em-up, Golden Axe.
This highly anticipated project will consist of ten animated episodes, with Mike McMahan (Star Trek: Lower Decks) and Joe Chandler (American Dad!) joining the team to co-write the first episode and executive produce the entire series with Chandler serving as showrunner.
Additionally, Sega’s Haruki Satomi, Shuji Utsumi, and Toru Nakahara (Sonic the Hedgehog) will also play crucial roles as executive producers alongside Neal H. Moritz, Pavun Shetty, and Toby Ascher of Original Film. Titmouse, the animation studio behind hit shows such as Big Mouth, will be actively involved in producing the series, with Chris Prynoski, Shannon Prynoski, Antonio Canobbio, and Ben Kalina serving as executive producers.
Comedy Central has also revealed a star-studded cast lineup for this series. Matthew Rhys (The Americans), Danny Pudi (Community and Mythic Quest), Liam McIntyre (Spartacus), Carl Tart (Star Trek: Lower Decks), and Lisa Gilroy (Glamorous) are among the talented actors who will be lending their voices to this project.
Pudi is Hampton Squib, with Rhys starring as Gilius Thunderhead, “a grumpy battle dwarf with exceptionally poor hygiene and a chip on his shoulder”. Gilroy is Tyris Flare, a “fearsome battle sorceress, deadly in a fight and even deadly with her sharp wit”, while McIntyre is Ax Battler, “a barbarian warrior with a strict code of honour and sweet golden retriever demeanour”. As for Tart, he’ll play Golden Axe 3’s “badass humanoid panther” Chronos ‘Evil’ Lait.
The animated series will be transformed into a comical animation. Golden Axe revolves around veteran warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead, as they embark on yet another mission to safeguard Yuria from the relentless evil giant Death Adder. Despite their best efforts, Death Adder continuously manages to reemerge, defying death itself. However, this time around, the group is fortunate enough to have gained the presence of the inexperienced and underprepared Hampton Squib.
The Golden Axe video game, which is slated to receive a new chapter in the next few years, is the latest addition to the steadily expanding roster of Sega properties that are getting adapted for various platforms. This news follows the success of Sonic the Hedgehog, which has become a blockbuster cinematic hit, with a third instalment featuring Keanu Reeves scheduled for this year.
