Resident Evil 2 Remake Becomes Franchise’s Highest Selling Game
Capcom Development Studio 1 has announced on Twitter/X that the Resident Evil 2 remake has become the highest-selling game in the series. The remake of the 1998 game has beaten the 10 million milestone in 2022 and has now made a total of 13.9 million sales as of March 2024.
The tweet stated:
“Resident Evil RE:2 surpassed 10 million copies sold in July 2022, and is currently the highest-selling game in the series, having sold over 13.9 million copies!
At the time, we were staying at home, so we weren’t able to celebrate, but we were finally able to do so
The positive feedback from everyone who has played the game is encouraging to all of our staff!”

A real shift in best-sellers has been observed since Resident Evil 7. For some time, Resident Evil 5 and 6 dominated the best-sellers list, but since 2017, Resident Evil 7, 2 remake, and Village all made the list. The remakes of Resident Evils 3 and 4 are not far behind, with 8.7 and 7 million sales.
The original game was launched in 1998 for PlayStation, Nintendo 64, GameCube, and Dreamcast. Resident Evil 2 has only managed to sell under 5 million copies to date. Capcom decided to make the remake, with full 3D environments and performance enhancements when it was ported to the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, adding the over-the-shoulder perspective as compared to the fixed camera angle.
The Resident Evil 2 remake was released in 2019 and is available on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam.
