Moana 2 Ending Explained & Post-Credits Breakdown
By Alleef AshaariVerified|November 28, 2024|0 Comment
Disney’s Moana 2 is now showing in Malaysian cinemas and it’s one of the year’s best-animated movies (check out our non-spoiler glowing review here).
Moana 2 reunites Moana (voice of Cravalho) and Maui (voice of Johnson) three years later for an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.
Directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand and Dana Ledoux Miller, and produced by Christina Chen and Yvett Merino, “Moana 2” features music by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Opetaia Foa‘i, and Mark Mancina. Jared Bush and Miller are writing the film, which is executive produced by Jennifer Lee, Bush and Johnson.
The film also features returning stars Rachel House (Moana’s Grandma, Tala), Temuera Morrison (Moana’s father, Chief Tui) and Nicole Scherzinger (Moana’s mother, Sina), as well as the voices of Hualalai Chung, David Fane and Rose Matafeo as Moana’s new crew members Moni, Kele and Loto, respectively. Awhimai Fraser voices the mysterious new character Matangi; Gerald Ramsey plays Moana’s ancestor, Tautai Vasa; and Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda lends her voice to Moana’s adoring and adorable little sister, Simea.
Spoilers ahead for Moana 2:
Essentially, the premise and plot of Moana 2 is that Moana receives a new calling from her ancestors to free the island of Motufetu from the curse of the storm god Nalo. Motufetu was the original island from which the scattered peoples and tribes of Polynesia once called home and originated.
Along with her crew and Maui, Moana reaches Motufetu at the end of the movie. However, Moana dies in the process of trying to free the curse on Motufetu when one of Nalo’s lightning strikes hits her. In a beautiful moment that comes with vibes of Avatar The Last Airbender, her ancestors resurrect Moana back to life as a demi-god, complete with her own Maui-like tattoos and weapon (her oar gets an upgrade with symbols on it, similar to Maui’s fish-hook).
Moana 2 ends with the Nalo’s curse on Motufetu lifted and the scattered people and tribes of Polynesia being able to reunite again. The ending teases that Moana’s power as a demigod is being able to find her way to where she wants to go, which fits her role as Tautai (Wayfinder).
Animated Disney movies rarely have post-credits scenes but Moana 2 is the rare exception. In the Moana 2 post-credits scene, we finally meet the storm god Nalo in the flesh (since he never appears in person during the events of Moana 2).
Nalo is punishing Matangi (one of the supporting characters in Moana 2) for helping Moana find her way to Motufetu. The scene ends with a tiny Tamatoa (the crab god from the first Moana) showing up unexpectedly.
While the scene is mostly played for laughs, a potential Moana 3 could see Nalo and Tamatoa teaming up (or maybe just Nalo himself) to seek revenge on Moana and Maui. We could see more elements of Polynesian mythology come into play as the scale and stakes get increasingly epic, considering that Moana is no longer just a normal human.
Of course, it all depends on if Disney wants to do a sequel or spinoff, but it’s extremely likely.
