Ubisoft Doing Well, PC Gaming Is Number One In Revenue

Despite all the contention concerning Assassin’s Creed Odyssey’s pay-to-save-time mechanics, it’s still one of Ubisoft‘s best-selling games. The company recently released their financial report for the first quarter of their 2019-2020 sales and there are some interesting findings.

PC gaming is now leading in terms of revenue with a 34% share of the pie. Ubisoft’s biggest moneymaker used to be the PS4 which generated 38% of the total revenue in the first quarter of 2018-2019. For the first quarter of 2019-2020, the PS4’s percentage dropped to 31%, putting it just a bit behind PC.

In the company’s conference call, CEO Yves Guillemot said that the PC’s good performance is helped a lot by Anno 1800, a PC-exclusive city-building strategy game. The game is sold on the Epic Games Store (EGS) and Ubisoft’s own Uplay Store but not on Steam. According to CFO Frederick Duguet, the game did well on the EGS and is also seeing a strong momentum on Uplay.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Rainbow Six Siege seem to the company’s two biggest darlings. Player recurring investment which includes purchase of digital items, DLCs, season passes, subscriptions, and advertising is cited as one of the major contributors. The Division 2 is apparently “the industry’s biggest hit since the beginning of the year” based on numbers from NPD, GSD, GfK, Famitsu, and the company’s own estimates.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey Fields Of Elysium

On a year-on-year basis, Ubisoft suffered a decrease in overall sales. With net bookings totaling up to €314 million (RM1.45 billion), it’s quite a decrease compared to the last first quarter’s €381 million (Rm1.76 billion). However, this is still better than what Ubisoft expected and the company is standing by its full-year target of €2,185 million (RM10.09 billion).

The report ends with a list of upcoming releases for the July – September 2019 period. Two Anno 1800 expansions and Rainbow Six Siege Year 4 Season 3 are some of the titles on that list.
