Steam Breaks Its Own Record Count By 300k
By Alleef Ashaari|February 3, 2020|0 Comment
Steam broke its own peak concurrent user count earlier today, reaching a whopping 18,801,944 at one point according to tracker site SteamDB. The previous record was 18.5 million two years ago on 6 January 2018. However, that doesn’t mean that the number of users who actually played games were nearly as high.
In actuality, the number of players in-game only reached 5.8 million today, despite the record amount of concurrent players on the platform. That’s still a far cry from the record-breaking seven million in-game players two years ago, which was boosted by the huge number of players in the then-newly-released PUBG.
At the time of writing, the reason why Steam broke its peak concurrent player record remains unknown, though the time of the peak does coincide with peak playtimes for all of Steam’s current top games, which includes Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Dota 2, PUBG, Grand Theft Auto V, and Monster Hunter: World.
.@Steam has broken its record for most concurrently online users that was held for two years. Previous record was 18,537,490 users. It’s still increasing!
But there’s about 1 million less players actually in-game (≈5.8mil vs ≈7mil two years ago).https://t.co/D6WDHbz0B4

It remains to be seen if Steam will be able to continue its winning streak, seeing as it has a lot more competition in 2020 in comparison to previous years, in the form of the Epic Games Store, Xbox Games Pass for PC, and others.
