New The Last Of Us Part 2 Gameplay Video Highlights A More “Open” World

Sony PlayStation has revealed a new The Last Of Us Part 2 breakdown video, detailing more of the gameplay and what new content to expect. According to Naughty Dog, the highly-anticipated game will feature open-ended levels, which means that player might actually miss certain story sequences or even entire parts of the game.

The Last Of Us Part 2 co-director Anthony Newman said:

“That pushed us to make our level design even more open than it was in the first game, which for us at the time, was pretty open.

In this game we’ve gone so far in making the level design open that there are actually entire story moments, entire combat encounters, like full scripted sequences, that you might completely miss.”

The reason for this is because the developers want players to “feel like you discovered them”, lending a certain “magic and charm” to these missable parts of the game. In comparison, the original The Last Of Us featured more linear levels, where all players had to do most of the time was simply move forward or to the next area in order to advance the story.

Besides that, to give Ellie an advantage over bigger and stronger enemies, the developers gave her a dedicated jump button, making combat more vertical and allowing players to take advantage of elevated places. Ellie can now also go into a chest-down prone position to avoid the enemies’ detection, but fortunately, players will have access to all weapons, items, and crafting while in that position.

Players will have to make more calculated choices in The Last Of Us Part 2, as there won’t be enough resources in a single playthrough to fully upgrade Ellie. Newman said:

“We put a much stronger emphasis on the importance of the choices you make in the longterm for your character.

Through the weapon upgrade system, through the player upgrade system, there aren’t enough resources in a single playthrough to fully upgrade your character.

The choices that you make, you’re going to have to live with.

And we wanted to make sure that all the choices that you made had a really noticeable and tangible impact on the way that you play.”

The Last Of Us Part 2 is slated to release on 19 June 2020. In the meantime, check out the new gameplay video below, or head on over here for the different editions of the game with Malaysian prices.
