How Video Game Companies Are Speaking Out Against Recent Anti-Asian Violence

This week was pretty grim as there were a string of murders that happened in Atlanta, Georgia in the US of A. As such, video game companies expressed their support for the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities.

To recap, the alleged shooter of the murders killed eight people, with six of them of Asian descent. Coupled with the fact that US President Joe Biden brought up hate crimes against Asian Americans during the coronavirus pandemic to some startling numbers and data from the Stop AAPI Hate group, this led to the #StopAsianHate hashtag trending on Twitter this week.

Several game companies like Bandai Namco, PlayStation, Xbox, and Ubisoft showed their support via social media. Some of them also made donations to the relevant organizations to make a difference.

We are troubled by a recent pattern of violence targeting the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. It’s time to take action. SIE is making a donation to Stop AAPI Hate, and we hope you can too. Learn how you can help here: stopaapihate.org

“Bungie stands with our Asian American & Pacific Islander communities, and we have made a donation to provide support and advocacy to those in need. Please support our AAPI families and friends. #StopAAPIHate.”

Bandai Namco

“As a company based in Japan, the recent rise in anti-Asian hate has truly hit home for our employees. We always appreciate support from our fans and we now ask for your support to #StopAsianHate and fight the rise in hate crimes committed against people of Asian descent.”

Hate has no home on Xbox. Team Xbox is appalled by the violence and racism against Asian communities. For all Asian players and peers, I want you to know that we see you, we hear you, and we will and must do more together to #StopAsianHate.”

“At Activision Blizzard, we condemn racism in the strongest possible terms. Our mission […] cannot be accomplished without diverse voices, views, backgrounds, and perspectives.

[…] Today, and every day, we stand with the Asian community and look to do our part to #StopAsianHate #StopAAPIHate. “

Square Enix
