Morbius the Sony Pictures superhero film came out last month and was universally panned for its dull plot and action. And yet somehow, it’s getting infamy when the digital and stream version of the film came out this month.

The phenomenon that grew since the film came out in April was dubbed the Morbius Sweep, and it’s basically internet trolls and users making fun of the film by stating how great and transcendent it is in an obvious mocking tone. Fans of this phenomenon are called Morbheads and some of them are even going so far to spread the “good word” by streaming the entire film on Twitch. These were taken down of course, but the new channels keep popping up. Long story short, the Morbius Sweep has gone into overdrive the past week and even up to now.

Why are they doing this? Well, it’s a combination of the film’ dubious quality, the serious tone of the film, and Jared Leto’s obnoxious method acting. This gave Morbius a sense of irony not unlike Tommy Wiseau’s The Room, and there’s a chance the film could be a cult classic.

Given the film’s sudden popularity, there’s a good chance Sony Pictures might just greenlight a sequel despite the film being ironically praised.
