The HBO Max Green Lantern Series Will Now Focus On John Stewart

Remember the HBO Max Green Lantern series that was announced back in 2020? We’ve finally gotten an update and it looks like the project is getting some major changes. The HBO Max Green Lantern series will now focus on John Stewart as its main protagonist, instead of the previously-announced Guy Gardner and Alan Scott. Finn Wittrock and Jeremy Irvine were slated to portray those two Green Lanterns.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project’s original writer and showrunner Seth Grahame-Smith has departed the series despite having completed scripts for a full season of eight episodes. The decision to restart the project with John Stewart was allegedly made only after DC Films head Walter Hamada left the position. The only remaining crew from the old project is Greg Berlanti and his Warner Bros. TV-based Berlanti Productions.

Previously it was said that the Green Lantern series would be the most expensive show DC ever made with a budget estimated in the US$120 million range. However, the new project will have significantly less budget under the new leadership.

It’s unclear who will be playing John Stewart, as the project is basically restarting development. John Stewart is the second human being in DC Comics canon to become a Green Lantern after Hal Jordan (third if you count Alan Scott but his ring isn’t from the same source). Stewart debuted in the comics in the 70s but later became especially popular after being featured as the main Green Lantern in the Justice League animated series.
