James Gunn Will Direct The Upcoming Superman Legacy Movie

James Gunn has announced that he will officially direct Superman Legacy, the first movie to kick off the upcoming DC Universe or DCU reboot. It is slated to premiere on 11 July 2025. According to Gunn, that date is special because it was the birthday of his father.

The DCU’s Chapter One Gods And Monsters begins with Superman Legacy, followed by The Authority, The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl Woman Of Tomorrow, and Swamp Thing, as well as more movie and TV series. You can read more about that in detail by heading over here for my previous coverage.

According to Warner Bros’ official logline, Superman Legacy tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

In his tweets, Gunn said:

“Yes, I’m directing Superman: Legacy to be released on July 11, 2025. My brother Matt told me when he saw the release date he started to cry. I asked him why. He said, “Dude, it’s Dad’s birthday.” I hadn’t realized.”
