Nintendo Switch 2 Reportedly To Launch In Late 2024

Nintendo’s next console or Switch 2 is reportedly due out in the second half of 2024, according to a recently released VGC report, citing “multiple people with knowledge of Nintendo’s next-gen console.”

The report stated that the release timing would ensure there is enough stock to prevent the manufacturing shortages PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S encountered in the past.

A few key developers have received development kits ahead of the launch. Further claimed that the new hardware would be able to be used in portable mode, similar to the current Nintendo Switch. Two sources suggested to the media outlet the Switch 2 may come with an LCD screen instead of an OLED screen to reduce costs, thereby balancing out the higher storage requirements for higher-fidelity games. Moreover, just like the current Switch, it will also accept physical games via a cartridge slot.

Several details, such as backwards compatibility with Switch games (physical and digital), are unclear. Nintendo said it intends to convert as many Switch users as possible to its new system, though some third-party publishers have expressed concern that legacy support for Switch games could negatively impact sales for next-gen titles.

None of these claims have yet been confirmed by Nintendo’s official spokesperson so we have to take it with a grain of salt. Given the nature of Nintendo, they will always have ways of defying expectations.
