Netflix January 2024: Our Picks & Highlights

I’m sure you won’t want to waste time sifting through Netflix’s extensive catalogue of shows and movies just to decide on what to watch. The streaming giant updates its site every day, week, and month with new content, so I’m here to save your precious time.

Here are my personal recommendations and highlights for Netflix Malaysia’s January 2024 lineup and how to fill up your free time with worthwhile content at home:

Rurouni Kenshin Season 1 (1 January 2024)

This reboot of the legendary and iconic Rurouni Kenshin is worth a watch. It’s essentially the Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood treatment for the franchise, which means a more faithful adaptation of the manga and better animation.

The Brothers Sun (4 January 2024)

The Brothers Sun. Michelle Yeoh as Mama Sun in episode 105 of The Brothers Sun. Cr. Michael Desmond/Netflix © 2023

When the head of a powerful Taiwanese triad is shot by a mysterious assassin, his eldest son, Charles (Justin Chien) heads to Los Angeles to protect his mother, Eileen (Michelle Yeoh), and his naive younger brother, Bruce (Sam Song Li) — who’s been completely sheltered from the truth of his family until now.

But as Taipei’s deadliest societies and a new rising faction go head-to-head for dominance — Charles and Bruce must figure out what brotherhood and family truly means before someone takes them out.

No Hard Feelings (8 January 2024)

Jennifer Lawrence produces and stars in No Hard Feelings, a laugh-out-loud, R-rated comedy from director Gene Stupnitsky (Good Boys) and the co-writer of Bad Teacher.

Maddie (Lawrence) thinks she’s found the answer to her financial troubles when she discovers an intriguing job listing: wealthy helicopter parents looking for someone to “date” their introverted 19-year-old son, Percy, and bring him out of his shell before he leaves for college. But awkward Percy proves to be more of a challenge than she expected, and time is running out. She has one summer to make him a man or lose it all.

Sonic Prime Season 3 (11 January 2024)

Sonic Prime: Season 3. (L to R) Ian Hanlin as Shadow the Hedgehog and Deven Mack as Sonic the Hedgehog in Sonic Prime: Season 3. Cr. NETFLIX © 2023

When Nine steals the Paradox Prism to create a world all for himself, Sonic must team up with unlikely allies to protect the Shatterverse as he knows it.

Lift (12 January 2024)

An international heist crew, led by Cyrus Whitaker (Kevin Hart), race to lift $500 million in gold from a passenger plane at 40,000 feet. Directed by F. Gary Gray and starring Kevin Hart, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Vincent D’Onofrio, Úrsula Corberó, Billy Magnussen, Viveik Kalra, Yun Jee Kim, and Sam Worthington.

Hungry Ghost Diner (19 January 2024)

Hungry Ghost Diner is a family-friendly film, which explores the heartfelt meaning behind the Hungry Ghost Festival through the eyes of its intrepid protagonist Bonnie Lam (played by Yoke ???), who discovers that her family’s coffee shop is haunted by ghosts of her dead relatives returning for the annual Ghost Festival at rural Behrang Stesen, Perak.

It’s a Malaysian movie, so let’s support local.

Griselda (25 January 2024)

The newly mechanized Skeletor, armed with the might of Motherboard, attacks the heart of Eternia while Prince Adam grapples with a new responsibility and what that means for him as He-Man!

Adam is forced to choose between the scepter or the sword, and a life as either the King or the Champion! Meanwhile, the new Sorceress Teela searches for the secret of Snake Magic in the mists of Darksmoke to rebuild a magic realm and help He-Man hold off the greatest threat Eternia has ever faced: the return of the despot Hordak, the ruthless leader of the Horde Empire!
