Ubisoft Pirate Game Skull And Bones Has Less Than One Million Players Since Launch

Ubisoft Singapore’s Skull And Bones has been released after 10 years of being in development hell, and it shows. Of course, it’s really up to the public to decide if a game is worth jumping into or is dead on arrival.

According to Insider Gaming and its sources, it’s shaping up to be the latter. Skull and Bones, the first “AAAAA” game from Ubisoft, has less than one million players total; specifically around 850,000 as of now. Many of those numbers are from people who played the 8-hour free trial provided by Ubisoft. Those players are on the game 3-4 hours per day, which seems promising, though we won’t know whether that converts to a full-time buy from the player until the next Ubisoft earnings call. That’s on May 2024.

Why Skull And Bones Isn’t Doing Well

We’re guessing the main factor is the US$70 “AAAAA” price point. Those same sources have stated that it’s the main issue that’s on debate internally in Ubisoft too. Said one employee in the project:

“I think we all know this is a $30-$40 game at best, but it’s not in our control to determine those things.”

We said this in our review, which stated that Skull and Bones’ base gameplay is fine but the whole package is pretty simple and underwhelming. However, the game has this whole of 2024 to shape up, sort out its roadmap, and add in more elements and improvements over time. It’s happened to the other pirate game Sea of Thieves, so I’m sure Ubisoft Singapore can do it if they’re allowed to by its head office.
