After more than 20 years in the gaming, machinima, and animated shows business, Rooster Teeth is closing its doors.

Parent company Warner Bros. Discovery is shutting down Rooster Teeth operations after it has failed to sell the unprofitable entertainment division known for shows like RWBY and Red vs. Blue. The shutdown will result in the layoffs of 150 full-time employees, alongside dozens of contractors and content creators. Here’s the internal memo from RT’s general manager Jordan Levin (via Variety):

“[I]t’s with a heavy heart I announce that Rooster Teeth is shutting down due to challenges facing digital media resulting from fundamental shifts in consumer behavior and monetization across platforms, advertising, and patronage. Our legacy is not just a collection of content but a history of pixels burned into our screens, minds, and hearts.”

Warner Bros. Discovery is in talks to sell the rights to certain Rooster Teeth catalog content like RWBY and Red vs. Blue, as well as the mecha series Gen: Lock.

Rooster Teeth was founded in 2003 by Burnie Burns, Matt Hullum, Geoff Ramsey, Jason Saldaña, Gus Sorola and Joel Heyman. The company got its start with the machinima series Red vs. Blue, and eventually became a media company with hit shows like RWBY. Lots of content creators got their start watching the Red vs. Blue series, or at least were inspired by it. It’s truly an end of an era, I suppose.
