PlayStation 5 Sales Reach Impressive Figures, but PlayStation 4 Still Leads

Sony has announced that the shipment of its PlayStation 5 console has reached an impressive figure, 59.3 million units sold worldwide as revealed in the company’s financial results for the three months ended 31 March 2024.

During the period under review, a total of 4.5 million PlayStation 5 units were dispatched, representing a decline of 1.8 million units compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year. Despite these reductions, the total number of PlayStation 5 units shipped throughout the fiscal year ending on March 31, 2024, reached an impressive figure of 20.8 million, showing an increase of 1.7 million units compared to the previous year.

As of this moment, the PlayStation 4 lifetime sales have amounted to 117.2 million units. In contrast, PlayStation 5’s sales lag by approximately 57.9 million units. The PlayStation 5 has faced various challenges, including supply chain disruptions and component shortages. These external factors have undoubtedly affected the overall availability of the console in the market, resulting in a slower adoption rate than the PlayStation 4.

Plus, Sony’s PlayStation witnessed significant growth in its monthly active users. As of March 31, there were 118 million monthly active users on the network, representing a rise of 10 million compared to the 108 million active users recorded during the same period of the previous fiscal year. This steady growth demonstrates the popularity of Sony’s gaming platforms and reinforces its position as a leading player in the gaming market.

In the three months of March 2024, the sale of PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 software reached a total of 72.6 million units, marking a growth of 4.6 million units compared to the 68 million software sold during the same period the previous fiscal year. Of this total, 12.3 million units were first-party titles, representing an increase of 2.8 million from the 9.5 million units sold during the same period the previous fiscal year.

Furthermore, it was observed that 77% of the software sales were full game software digital downloads, representing an increase of 7% compared to the figure from the same period in the previous fiscal year. This highlights the growing preference for digital downloads among players.
