Longlegs Breaks Box Office Records For Indie Horror Films
Horror movies have just gotten a massive boost as Longlegs garners a whopping US$22.6 million in its opening weekend and that’s only in the US alone (we’ll have to wait for the worldwide numbers). That is even more impressive considering that the movie’s budget was under US$10 million. It’s also quite deserved in our opinion, so check out our full review of the movie here.
According to BoxOfficePro, this is enough to give Longlegs the biggest horror opening of the year and movie distributor Neon its biggest opening ever, but also the highest-grossing opening for an independent horror film of the last decade, as well as the only one to pass US$20 million in its opening weekend. That’s above Woman In Black 2 (US$15 million), Child’s Play (US$14 million), and Hereditary (US$13.5 million).
Neon released the following statement:
“It has been an incredible, historic weekend for Longlegs, and it’s a testament to the wildly creative, exciting film Osgood Perkins and his fantastic group of collaborators created. We’re so happy audiences experienced the collective horror together inside a dark theater.
We couldn’t be happier with the results, and we look forward to continuing our relationship with Osgood and his team of producers, all of whom have allowed us the freedom to build a campaign we believe in.”
Longlegs is directed by Osgood Perkins (The Blackcoat’s Daughter, Gretel & Hansel) and stars Nicolas Cage alongside Maika Monroe, with Monroe playing an FBI agent and Cage playing a serial killer.
The synopsis reads:
In the film, “FBI Agent Lee Harker (Monroe) is a gifted new recruit assigned to the unsolved case of an elusive serial killer (Cage). As the case takes complex turns, unearthing evidence of the occult, Harker discovers a personal connection to the merciless killer and must race against time to stop him before he claims the lives of another innocent family.”
Longlegs is now showing in Malaysian cinemas since it premiered on 12 July 2024.
