Former Blizzard CEO Reveals Debut Ambitious Tabletop-Inspired Game
By Alisha Alix|October 11, 2024|0 Comment
Dreamhaven, the game company founded by former Blizzard boss Michael Morhaime, has just unveiled its exciting debut tabletop-inspired game, Sunderfolk. The game aims to bring back the joy of playing Dungeons & Dragons with friends without the hassle of rulebooks. Instead of traditional game pieces, players will use their phones as controllers for everything in the game.
Sunderfolk is a turn-based tactical RPG featuring classic hero classes and mechanics familiar to fans of tabletop games and CRPGs. Set in the fantastical world of the Sunderlands, the game is populated by animal warriors and monsters. Players can choose from six hero classes: Arcanist, Bard, Berserker, Pyromancer, Ranger, and Rogue.
Similar to D&D, players can customize their character’s abilities and embark on quests either solo or with up to three friends. The game requires only one copy and an internet connection, and friends can easily join by scanning a QR code and downloading the app on iOS or Android to create their own characters. This modern approach aims to make the game more accessible while still capturing the essence of a traditional tabletop experience.
Combat is turn-based, with players selecting from a deck of skill cards to attack. Fate Cards played each turn will impact the effectiveness of attacks, adding an element of luck. Players must customize their decks and coordinate with each other to ensure victory.
After Morhaime left Blizzard Entertainment, he founded two development studios, Secret Door and Moonshot Games, staffed by fellow ex-Blizzard employees. The team has been hard at work since 2020 developing their debut title, Sunderfolk.
While an exact release date hasn’t been revealed yet, Sunderfolk is set to launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Steam sometime in 2025. With its fresh new approach and the pedigree of its creators, this is shaping up to be a highly anticipated game for tabletop and tactical RPG fans alike.
