Thousands Layered Blade: Reforged Brings Sumi-e Art To Life On PC

While the trailer for Thousands Layered Blade: Reforged dropped back in September, it’s only recently that I came across this visually mesmerising RPG from Indonesia’s 13th Game Studio. Originally an Android game known as Senso no Ken: Thousands Layered Blade, this 3D action RPG is making its way to PC, capturing a world of tactical samurai battles with striking sumi-e-inspired graphics enhanced by realistic brush stroke effects. Despite the news being a few months old, I couldn’t resist diving in to share my impressions of the trailer and what makes this title stand out.

Rediscovering a World of Conflict & Honour

Set in the fictional Far East, the story plunges us into a nation in perpetual conflict. Warlords backed by samurai armies battle for control, while an Emperor and his Imperial Force seek to unify the region under one rule. However, the four legendary Kenseis—renowned Sword Saints—foresee that such unity would lead the samurai to forsake their way of life. Refusing to bow to the Imperials, they spark a rebellion, with players taking on the role of a young female assassin caught in the turmoil.

Mastery in Combat and Artistic Precision

Beyond its captivating storyline, Thousands Layered Blade: Reforged integrates the sumi-e art style into every aspect of gameplay. Players are challenged to master the combat system by blocking, parrying, and timing counterattacks for maximum impact. Between battles, mini-games offer a bit of relaxation, adding variety to the intense experience. As players progress, they can unlock unique skills and special moves, tailoring each battle to their style. Each playthrough offers new katanas and equipment, inviting players back for more.

First Impressions of the Trailer

Even months later, the trailer remains striking, showcasing just how well the sumi-e art style translates into a 3D-action RPG format. The realistic brush stroke simulations add a depth that isn’t often seen in games. The trailer hints at a gameplay rhythm that feels almost like an ink-painting performance—each move in combat is precise and calculated. Fans of action RPGs who crave both strategic gameplay and visually artistic experiences will find much to anticipate here.

Though Thousands Layered Blade: Reforged might have been under the radar for some, it’s worth rediscovering for the beauty of its art style and the depth of its combat. This title seems poised to bring a unique blend of elegance and action to the PC RPG landscape.
