Malcolm In The Middle Revival Brings Back The Chaos—With One Big Change
By Lewis Larcombe|March 26, 2025|0 Comment
Disney+ has been digging through its nostalgia vault like a desperate hoarder, reviving every old show it can get its hands on. Now, after plundering its own Disney Channel catalogue, it’s moving onto its Fox properties—starting with Malcolm in the Middle. Yes, the dysfunctional family that made the 2000s bearable is reuniting for a revival, with Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston, Jane Kaczmarek, Christopher Masterson, and Justin Berfield all reprising their roles.
Series creator Linwood Boomer is also back, writing all four episodes, while Ken Kwapis returns as director. That’s right—only four episodes. Not a full season, not a reboot, just a short and (hopefully) sweet reunion.
The official synopsis is as follows: Malcolm (Muniz) and his daughter are dragged back into the family madhouse when Hal (Cranston) and Lois (Kaczmarek) summon them for their 40th wedding anniversary. If history tells us anything, this gathering will likely involve emotional trauma, near-death experiences, and at least one person getting covered in something unspeakable.
But hold on—there’s a missing piece. What about Dewey?
Erik Per Sullivan, the original Dewey, won’t be returning. He retired from acting over 15 years ago and has been dodging reunions ever since. Rather than write Dewey out, the show has cast Fargo’s Caleb Ellsworth-Clark as his replacement. If The Brady Bunch can have a “Fake Jan,” we suppose Malcolm in the Middle can have a “Fake Dewey.”
Also joining the cast is Fear Street’s Kiana Madeira, who will play Malcolm’s girlfriend. According to the character description, she’s “charming and opinionated” and, let’s be honest, far too good for him.
Running for seven seasons and over 150 episodes from 2000 to 2006, Malcolm in the Middle doesn’t always get the credit it deserves. It popularized the single-camera sitcom long before The Office or Modern Family made it the industry standard. No laugh track, no forced studio audience reactions—just pure, unfiltered family dysfunction.
There’s no confirmed release date for the revival yet, but given that 2025 marks Malcolm in the Middle’s 25th anniversary, Disney+ is likely aiming to drop it some time then. Until that day comes, we’ll just have to wait patiently—and hope Fake Dewey is up to the task.
