Happy May The 4th: Here Are The Best Modern Star Wars Games

This article was published on the week of 30 August 2024. It’s been brought forward to celebrate 4th May 2025.

In recent years, we’ve seen a slew of new Star Wars games from various developers and publishers, even though EA had exclusive rights to the franchise for a while there. The most recent one being Star Wars Outlaws from Ubisoft, of course, but there are a ton of others from various publishers and developers that do their best to stay true to The Force.

For the purposes of this article, we’re only counting the canon major mainline Star Wars games that were released more recently on consoles and PC, so there won’t be mobile games, VR titles or older non-canon classics like Star Wars Knights Of The Old Republic.

Now that we have reviewed Star Wars Outlaws (check out our full review here), let’s rank the recent modern Star Wars games and see where Star Wars Outlaws stacks up.

5. LEGO Star Wars The Skywalker Saga (2022)

Ever since the first LEGO Star Wars game in 2005, they have been a staple of Star Wars video games, especially to introduce younger gamers to the Star Wars franchise. 2022’s LEGO Star Wars The Skywalker Saga is the most complete and definitive version of a LEGO Star Wars game to date, allowing players to play through the stories of all nine Star Wars movies.

However, as fun as LEGO Star Wars can be, it doesn’t add anything new to existing canon lore, so it’s more of a fun game to relax to or for younger games, so that’s why it’s at the bottom of this list.

4. Star Wars Battlefront 2 (2017)

EA DICE’s Star Wars Battlefront 2 was not well-received by fans at the beginning, especially when they compared the game to the original Star Wars Battlefront 2 in 2005. It grew amongst fans as it added more content and updates, though it still never reached the heights of the original game.

The game did add some significant things to the lore, including characters like Iden Versio, Emperor Palpatine’s Operation Cinder, showed us the Battle Of Jakku that ended the Galactic Civil War, and more.

3. Star Wars Squadrons (2020)

Star Wars Squadrons offers something that not many Star Wars games do, a flight sim experience piloting the iconic ships in the franchise. It’s essentially the Star Wars version of Ace Combat. It may be a bit too technical for casual players but for those willing to learn the ropes, the gameplay is deeply satisfying. Unfortunately, this game can’t be higher on the list because the story campaign was forgettable and doesn’t add much to the existing lore.

2. Star Wars Outlaws (2024)

Star Wars Outlaws is said to be the first open-world Star Wars game. While it has its flaws (familiar gameplay mechanics and too much focus on stealth), the game nails the experience of being a scoundrel or criminal in the Star Wars underworld. The developers at Massive Entertainment have devoted a lot of painstaking effort to making the game’s world as immersive and detailed as possible. There’s no other Star Wars game that offers this same experience of being a scoundrel, so as flawed as this game can be, it deserves to be played by Star Wars fans who are looking for something not related to the Jedi or lightsabers.

1. Star Wars Jedi Survivor / Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order

There’s no denying that if you ask any Star Wars fan or gamer right now, their answer for the best modern canon Star Wars game will likely be either Star Wars Jedi Survivor or Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order. Respawn Entertainment’s games are the best way to live out your fantasy of being a Jedi, with satisfying combat and a story that’s amazing as well.

Who’s your favourite Jedi? For some, it might as well be Cal Kestis. If there’s one Star Wars game franchise every Star Wars fan MUST PLAY, it’s definitely this one.
