Full Mobile Ports of SEGA Classics are Now Free to Keep
Epic Games started the trend with free games to keep. Then the competition followed. For mobile gamers that has never caught on. That changed this week when SEGA quietly made its relatively low-priced fan-favourite and cult-classics free for all to download and keep.
Notice of this nice move came in the form of an in-game pop-up notice:
There is a catch – it’s only for Google Play and Apple App Store. Confirmation for Huawei App Gallery is on the way.
Previously, some of these titles are tagged with RM10 to RM18 pricing.
Here is the easy reference list of the (in)famous games that Sega put out for all to download earlier this week:
- Crazy Taxi Classic: Android / iOS
- Golden Axe Classics (1 to 3): Android / iOS
- Shining Force Classics (1, 2, and Darkness): Android / iOS
- Sonic CD Classic: Android / iOS
- Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Ep II: Android / iOS
- Streets of Rage Classic: Android / iOS
- Streets of Rage 2 Classic: Android / iOS
- Super Monkey Ball (Sakura Edition): Android / iOS
- Virtua Tennis Challenge: Android / iOS
Similar to the free games from Epic, these nine Sega Classics are free to download until further notice and will not have any advertising embedded within.
This move is not a first for Sega, as it has offered the same for lesser-known entries in its Classics Library for mobile. Like the first round of free games being offered, these nine is set to lose long-term support and lifecycle updates soon.
Just as per the first set of free games, Sega is expected to remove them altogether from both Google Play and Apple App Store. The only way to save these as long-term keepsakes is to download them onto devices that will not be reformatted or refreshed for years to come.
Once the classic Sega game apps are gone from devices, deleted by accident or intentionally, they will be gone for good. For more on Sega, check out our recent review of one of its subsidiary company’s action RPG titles.
