Samsung’s Latest Z Fold Device Boasts Slimmest Ever Silhouette
Ever since the dawn of folding smart devices, Samsung have always led the way. Be it being the pioneers of this (then) sub-genre of smartphones, Samsung were expected to not just annually release new and upgraded versions of the devices under its Fold series; the latter iterations have to be sleeker as well.
Unlike typical slab phones which only sport a single screen, folding phones come with a slew of new challenges and setbacks. Because, you know, physics. The challenge being: how do you ensure a device sporting two separate screens remain ‘light’ while at the same time improving over its predecessors. Making the successor lighter and smaller requires immense sacrifice and drawbacks. But when it comes to the Fold series, Samsung managed to buck the trend.
Many assumed the Korean brand had hit the wall after shaving off 14g from the Z Fold5 when unveiling the Z Fold6, which weighed a measly 239g. While 14grams may not look much on paper, it is significant once you plonk it into your pants pocket.
Hence it’s such a big deal when Samsung unveiled that this year’s iteration not only is the one sporting the largest cover screen on a Z Fold device ever, but it is also the lightest and slimmest.

Numbers don’t lie and as you can see from the images below (provided by Samsung), while overall thickness1 declined by 29% across the first six generations -from the Galaxy Fold in 2019 to the Galaxy Z Fold6 in 2024 – a significant 26% reduction was achieved in just the past year.

The boffins at Samsung somehow crammed all that power into a much more compact device dimension-wise, reduced its weight and somehow delivered larger screens; both on cover and the folding one. This is modern-day sorcery.
In hand, the folded form of the Z Fold 7 feels not far off from the S25 Ultra. The heft, thickness and weight are very close to Samsung’s 2025 flagship but with an ace up the Z Fold7’s sleeve. The inner screen. Initial thoughts is that we have a potential device of the year in our hands; a device that will send other brands into another frenzy.
Of course, this is based on our brief experience with the device at Samsung’s launch event the other day. Full review and daily-use experience should come swiftly once we get our paws on the review units. But until then, you too can check them out at Samsung’s retail outlets near you.
Starting from RM7,799 for the 12+256GB models and going all the way up to RM9,899 for the 16GB + 1TB variant, the Samsung Galaxy Fold7 is now open for pre-orders at Samsung’s website or any of their brick-and-mortar stores.
Also unveiled during Samsung’s recent Unpacked event were the stylish, more compact Galaxy Z Flip 7, the slightly more affordable version, the Galaxy Z Flip7E, and the latest versions of Samsung’s smartwatches; the Watch8, Watch8 Classic and the Watch Ultra.
