VisionQuest Review: Marvel’s Most Existential Offering By Far
While its “prequel series” focused on loss and grief, VisionQuest expertly and further explore themes of acceptance alongside the meaning of life as it delve into matters of AI sentience all wrapped up in a solid package which surprisingly tops the already stellar WandaVision.
Paul Bettany, at his best, portrays a character torn and conflicted with what he was and who he wants to become as he balances new realities of not just being a sentient being with a colourful and chequered past, but also coming to sudden terms of being a parent. Vision has always been a complex and nuanced character in the Marvel media and is further developed, taking into account present day discourse concerning artificial intelligence’s capabilities, understanding of emotion and ability to evolve beyond human comprehension. Heck, this makes me want to rewatch the Matrix trilogies.

A stellar supporting cast embodying Tony Stark’s previous AIs such as Jarvis and Friday rewards long-time MCU viewers whilst keeping newcomers up to speed with their quirks and unique mannerisms. Meanwhile, James Spader shines as the big baddie Ultron, adding layers upon layers of this complex character who’s more than just ones and zeros when it comes to morality and life questions.
A word of advice? A rewatch of Avengers: Age of Ultron is a more suitable homework before jumping into VisionQuest as opposed to WandaVision. Don’t get us wrong. We are not trying to get you to sympathise with a maniacle killer robot but what VisionQuest was trying to do, and actually succeeded in, was to give more nuance and depth to Ultron’s character – something that Age of Ultron failed.
How this series slots into the larger MCU picture especially with the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday remains to be seen but VisionQuest excels in its role as the perfect in-between MCU tv series which ties up storylines whilst simultaneously opening up new branches for New Avengers … we mean new adventures.
Final Score: 90/100
