The People Who Own Gearbox Software Plans To Continue US$8 Billion Buying Spree
Embracer Group, the folks who own Gearbox Software (Borderlands 3, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands), is not done with its spending spree.
The group intends to continue with its US$8 billion acquisition spree. Since 2020, the company has made 62 acquisitions that are worth US$8.1 billion total.
CEO Lars Wingefors told the Financial Times that he plans to make a similar number of acquisitions in the next few months and years. He plans to invest in the free-to-play games space in UK, US, Poland, France, and China. His company’s philosophy so far is to target companies and entrepreneurs with a good track record, then take the hands-off approach with them.
“From a commercial standpoint, we don’t have central, commercial decision-making. Looking at other companies, they’ve struggled when they put too many layers of directors and management and start controlling creators, that’s when they start falling apart.
If you can make one game, you have a big business risk but if you make 200 games, like we do, the business risk is less.”
Embracre Group currently has a market valuation of US$9.9 billion and 115 internal game development studios & publishers. These include THQ Nordic, Koch Media/Deep Silver, Saber Interactive, and Gearbox Software. The company bought the latter for US$1.4 billion.
