Pixar’s Lightyear Is Not Going To Show In Malaysia; Here’s Why

Turns out Malaysia will not be getting the Toy Story spin-off in cinemas for now.

According to our pals from Goggler, Pixar’s Lightyear will not be showing in Malaysian cinemas. The film was supposed to be aired on 16 June. There is no official statement from both Disney and Malaysia’s government film board Lembaga Penapisan Filem (LPF) concerning the all-ages film not being screened in the Southeast Asian country. Most of us suspect that it may have a lot to do with one of the show’s main character Alisha Hawthorne (Uzo Aduba) having a same sex relationship with another unknown female character. A scene in the film showcases Alisha getting engaged to a woman, as well as a montage showing glimpses of Alisha and her partner kissing each other on the lips as a greeting like how two loving partners would greet each other in public.

The LPF has quite a strict censorship guide where any theme, dialogue, or scene involving “homosexual and unnatural sex scenes” will be scrutinized. Films that are affected as of late due to said “homosexual” elements include Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore and Rocketman. Seeing as Disney most likely refused suggestions for an edited version for Malaysian cinemas, the Malaysian cinema release of Lightyear will be withheld.

Unless you don’t mind traveling to other SEA countries for your Pixar’s Lightyear screening fix (like in Singapore or The Philippines), you may have to wait a few months until the film releases on the Disney+ streaming platform, this being one of the many other methods of viewing a “controversial” film involving a kid’s spaceman action figure and its fictional movie.
