Bringing Troublemaker’s Budi To Life: An Interview With Abel Valentino

Troublemaker is one of the hottest games coming out of Indonesia right now, following new kid Budi, and his fight to the top of the high school food chain. The game has a distinct spirit of nostalgia, and has a fun setting and characters. You can find our review of the game here.

We had the opportunity to do a quick interview with Budi’s Indonesian voice actor, Abel Valentino, on what it took to bring Budi to life and what it’s like being a voice actor in Indonesia right now. Let’s get to it!

Congratulations on the release of Troublemaker! Can you tell us how you landed the role of Budi?

Right place, right timing.

Someone reposted a casting call for Troublemaker on my feed and I decided to just try it out, why not right? And now I’m here.

What was your favourite part about voicing Budi?

Budi’s character is often angry and he screams quite a lot due to his predicament. At first, I thought it was funny, but screaming the way he does end up being my favourite way of jumping back in character, and my favourite thing overall.
Were there any lines that really left an impact on you?

A moment that I always liked in films is when the main character declares war, whether it be in a serious or angry tone – “KALO GITU, MULAI DETIK INI, GUA NYATAIN PERANG KE LO BANGSAT!”

Tell us about your voice-acting journey.

Voicing Budi is actually my debut as a voice talent. My friends always said they liked my voice and I should try working as an actor or in radio, so I decided to take the leap of faith with Troublemaker.

What’s the voice-acting scene in Indonesia like?

One word: sexy. Disclaimer first, since this is my opinion.

As everything goes digital in the world, including Indonesia, the demand for localization in gaming, animation, OTT, e-learning, and audiobooks is on the rise. Especially both the gaming and animation industries where skilled voice actors are needed to bring characters to life.

This brings us to the rise of the virtual YouTubers or VTuber community in Indonesia. Trust me, very very talented people there with golden voices. Overall, the scene is set to keep growing with new tech and talented people emerging all the time.

Any final words?

I’ve definitely had fun breathing life into Budi from Troublemaker, and I am more eager than ever to tackle more roles in the future. Many thanks to Sophie and Kakuchopurei for the interview; very lovely people to work with.

Don’t forget to Raise your gang and play Troublemaker, available on Steam now!

Like he said, Troublemaker is available now on Steam.
