One of Square Enix’s possibly biggest mobile games is out right now in Japan: Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis. It’s an action RPG that recaps the events of the famous Final Fantasy (which we talked about on TV recently) that also comes with additional scenes and bits of lore like main baddie Sephiroth’s debut in SOLDIER.

It’s definitely going to get a crowd (300 million downloads at launch, by the way), so much so that publisher/developer Square Enix has restricted access to the game servers via VPN. Why? Because doing so violates the game’s terms of service. The decision was made due to a large number of unauthorized accounts that accessed the Japanese servers of the spin-off mobile game. After all, using third-party software to access the game is violating said terms of service.

So if you’re accessing the game right now using VPN while in Malaysia, chances are your account will be banned. The official announcement is below:

The English Twitter/X account of Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis hasn’t made any official announcement regarding the VPN restrictions, but it’s best to play it safe and assume that it’s a worldwide initiative. So if you want to officially play the game, you have to wait until the game gets Asia servers. Which may take a long while.
