Star Wars The Bad Batch Season 3 Premiere: What Is Project Necromancer?

The first three episodes of Star Wars The Bad Batch Season 3 are now streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.

In the first three episodes of Star Wars The Bad Batch Season 3, Doctor Hemlock and Nala Se are handling a big project called Project Necromancer. However, this is actually not the first time it’s been mentioned in Star Wars lore. Project Necromancer was previously mentioned back in The Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 7 ‘The Spies’.

Back in The Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 7 ‘The Spies’ (which takes place in the FUTURE after the events of everything in Star Wars The Bad Batch), Commandant Brendol Hux mentions that Project Necromancer is in place for the return of Imperial leadership (read: return of Emperor Palpatine) and the research for the project is continued by Doctor Penn Pershing.

What is Project Necromancer? As surmised by fans, the first three episodes of Star Wars The Bad Batch Season 3 reveal that Project Necromancer is essentially a project to clone Emperor Palpatine. However, one of the obstacles faced by the project is not being able to recreate enough M-count.

What is M-count? M-count refers to the Midi-chlorian count. Midi-chlorians are microscopic, intelligent life forms that reside within the cells of all living organisms and they are how the Jedi (and Force-sensitive individuals) channel the Force.

It seems that in order to successfully make a clone of Emperor Palpatine, they need to be able to replicate his M-count or Midi-chlorian count. Considering that it’s Emperor Palpatine and his level of power, he probably has one of the highest M-count ever recorded, which is likely why Project Necromancer eventually takes so long (until years later during the era of The Mandalorian) before it finally achieves success.

The end of the three episodes of Star Wars The Bad Batch Season 3 reveals that Omega is the only specimen whose blood is capable of doing that.

Project Necromancer is the lore reason for why Emperor Palpatine manages to return in 2019’s Star Wars Episode IX The Rise Of Skywalker.

In the epic final season of Star Wars The Bad Batch, the Batch will have their limits tested in the fight to reunite with Omega as she faces challenges of her own inside a remote Imperial science lab. With the group fractured and facing threats from all directions, they will have to seek out unexpected allies, embark on dangerous missions, and muster everything they have learned to free themselves from the Empire.

Star Wars The Bad Batch follows the elite and experimental clones of the Bad Batch as they find their way in a rapidly changing galaxy in the immediate aftermath of the Clone Wars. Members of Bad Batch; a unique squad of clones who vary genetically from their brothers in the Clone Army; each possess a singular exceptional skill that makes them extraordinarily effective soldiers and a formidable crew.

Star Wars The Bad Batch stars Emmy Award nominee Dee Bradley Baker (American Dad!) as the voice of the Bad Batch and Emmy Award nominee Michelle Ang (Fear the Walking Dead: Flight 462) as the voice of Omega. Emmy Award winner Rhea Perlman (The Mindy Project, Cheers) returns to guest star as Cid, Noshir Dalal (It’s Pony, The Owl House) returns to guest star as Vice Admiral Rampart, and Emmy Award winner Wanda Sykes (The Upshaws, Black-ish) makes her guest starring debut in the series as Phee Genoa.

Three years ago, we managed to participate in a brief exclusive interview with actress Gwendoline Yeo, who voices the Kaminoan named Nala Se in Star Wars The Bad Batch, as well in a roundtable interview with head writer and executive producer Jennifer Corbett as well as supervising director and executive producer Brad Rau, courtesy of Disney+ Hotstar Malaysia.
