Chrono Sword: Early Access Launches On 6 December For PC

The pixel art Soulslike action RPG Chrono Sword is set to launch in Early Access for PC via Steam on 6 December, as announced by publisher CFK and developer 21c.Ducks. A full release will follow later, expanding to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X | S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

The Early Access version offers about 30% of the game’s total content, featuring three regions, a variety of monsters and bosses, and an array of equipment to experiment with.

A Fresh Take on Soulslike Combat

Combat is the heart of any action RPG, and Chrono Sword reimagines the Soulslike formula with a blend of heavy hits and fluid mechanics for an intense yet rewarding experience. Here’s a breakdown of its unique combat features:

  1. Quick Evade
Ditching the traditional roll, players can perform a swift dodge with precise evade mechanics. This not only avoids enemy strikes but also sets up counterattacks.
  2. Attack Cancel
With the right timing, you can interrupt an ongoing attack to chain into a new strike, block, or evade. Efficiency depends on the chosen weapon, making mastery essential.
  3. Finishing Attacks
Stun enemies with an attack cancel, then deliver a powerful finishing move for massive damage.
  4. Skill Attacks
Strong attacks can evolve into dynamic skill moves by combining them with directional inputs. Each weapon boasts two unique skill commands, offering tactical variety.
  5. Versatile Items
Combat utilities include short- and long-range weapons, arrows for stunning enemies, and whetstones to imbue weapons with elemental effects like fire, frost, or lightning.

An Indie Masterpiece in the Making

Developed by the Korean indie studio 21c.Ducks, Chrono Sword transports players to the gothic fantasy world of Adelnor, where time travel between the past and future unveils hidden secrets.

Since its debut in 2019, the game has captivated audiences with its striking pixel art and quarter-view design, a refreshing departure from the 3D-heavy Soulslike norm. After a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2020, raising over US$70,000, the team has tirelessly refined its storytelling, action, and RPG elements.

Players step into a seamless world, transitioning between eras without loading screens. The game’s ambitious design has earned it accolades at various events, including nominations at the Busan Indie Connect Festival and a special award at the Burning Beaver Festival 2022.

Recent Showcases

Chrono Sword made waves at the Tokyo Game Show 2024, where a polished demo impressed fans and highlighted its evolved combat and RPG mechanics. Building on this momentum, the game participated in Steam Next Fest in October, showcasing expanded content and drawing a global audience eager for its Early Access release.

A Promising Legacy

For indie enthusiasts, 21c.Ducks is no stranger to innovation. Their journey began with the mobile hit Timing Hero in 2015, followed by Super Pixel Racers in 2018. With Chrono Sword, the team aims to solidify their reputation as pioneers of indie game development, blending nostalgia with groundbreaking gameplay.
