The Peaky Blinders Prequel Game Reminds Us Of Invisible Inc.

It’ll probably be a while before we get a new season of Peaky Blinders, considering that the latest season ended only several months ago in September 2019. However, fans of the show will be glad to learn that a prequel video game is in the works by Futurlab, best known for their 2014 side-scrolling shoot ’em up Velocity 2X.

Published by Curve Digital, Peaky Blinders: Mastermind is a puzzle-adventure game with a top-down isometric perspective for the PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Every level will have players controlling six members of the Shelby family simultaneously. Entire levels can be rewound and replayed, allowing players to adjust the actions of each character in order to progress.

Each member of the Shelby family comes with their own unique abilities. For instance, Tommy can be ‘threatening’, Arthur has ‘brawling and door kicking’, Polly has ‘bribing and lock picking’, John has ‘arson and brawling’, Ada can ‘distract’, while Finn has ‘sneaking and pickpocketing’.

The game is basically a strategy game of sorts where players have to use the abilities of each character to overcome obstacles and pull off heists. The gameplay looks similar to other isometric games like Invisible Inc. or Shadowrun Returns.

Developed with showrunner Steven Knight, Peaky Blinders: Mastermind takes place before the show’s first season, as the Shelby family discovers a plot to put their burgeoning criminal empire out of business.

Meanwhile, the game’s soundtrack is by Feverist, the very same art-rock band that scored the show’s first season. Game director James Marsden said (about the game’s core mechanics, via IGN):

“There’s a point in the show where Tommy Shelby explains he has no concern for the past, nor the future; all he cares about is a crucial moment he calls the soldier’s minute.

We designed our game around that idea, allowing the player to plan actions backwards and forward in time, choreographing an ensemble cast of characters to synchronise their actions during these crucial moments.

The player gets to feel like the smart and sophisticated leader that Tommy is, so we think becoming the mastermind will resonate with fans of the show and gamers alike.”

There’s no official release date for the game as of yet, but it is slated to launch sometime in summer 2020. You can also Wishlist the game on Steam. In the meantime, check out the trailer (and some gameplay footage) below.
