Dragon Quest The Adventure Of Dai Is Getting Three Games & An Anime

Dragon Quest is basically Dragon Ball in a dungeons-and-dragons-like fantasy setting with the same artist and character designer; the legendary Akira Toriyama. Considering the success of 2018’s Dragon Quest XI: Echoes Of An Elusive Age, it’s the best time for Toei Animation to announce a whopping three new games and an anime series based on the franchise.

In commemoration of Dragon Quest Day in Japan (via Gematsu), Square Enix has revealed details for three games and an anime series based on Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai; the manga of the same name which was published by Shonen Jump from 1989 to 1996. This will actually be the second anime adaptation of the same property; the first having aired from 1991 to 1992.

However, the plot of Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai is unrelated to any of the eleven Dragon Quest games. It follows protagonist Dai, a 12-year-old boy who lives on an island of peaceful monsters with dreams of becoming a hero. Destiny comes calling when the demon lord, Hadlar, returns to start a new reign of terror.

Dragon Quest: The Adventure Of Dai Anime

Dragon Quest Dai 1

Square Enix and Toei Animation have announced that the new Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai TV anime will begin airing sometime in October 2020.

The anime’s main voice is as follows:

  • Dai (voiced by Atsumi Tanezaki).
  • Popp (voiced by Toshiyuki Toyonaga).
  • Maam (voiced by Mikako Komatsu).
  • Leona (voiced by Saori Hayami).
  • Avan (voiced by Takahiro Sakurai).
  • Hyunckel (voiced by Yuuki Kaji).

Dragon Quest series creator Yuji Horii said:

“While the original Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai anime ended halfway [into the series], I’m looking forward to be able to complete it this time.”

Infinity Strash – Dragon Quest: The Adventure Of Dai

Dragon Quest Dai 2

Publisher Square Enix and developer Game Studio have announced action JRPG Infinity Strash – Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai for console(s). However, specific platforms were not announced. It is slated to launch in Japan sometime in 2021.

Players will be able to freely control characters from Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai, and face against monsters and powerful foes using familiar spells and special attacks, albeit in real-time (which is a departure from the franchise’s turn-based roots).

Dragon Quest: The Adventure Of Dai – Xross Blade

Dragon Quest Dai 3

Publisher Square Enix and developer Takara Tomy A.R.T.S have announced collectible card game Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai – Xross Blade. It will launch in Japanese arcades sometime in fall 2020.

There will apparently be various merchandise planned for release alongside the game, including a “Card Album” and an “Adventure Log” that registers play data of players.

Dragon Quest: The Adventure Of Dai – Tamashii no Kizuna

Dragon Quest Dai 4

Publisher Square Enix and developer DeNA have announced Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai – Tamashii no Kizuna (Bonds of Souls), which is described as an “exhilarating great dash RPG” for iOS and Android. It will launch in Japan sometime in 2021.

Players will be able to cooperate with popular characters from the series like Dai, Popp, Maam, and Crocodine in the game’s three-lane battles that Square Enix describes as “simple, but deep”.

Unfortunately, it remains unclear as of now whether any or all of these will be released outside of Japan as well. At the very least, the Infinity Strash – Dragon Quest: The Adventure Of Dai console game might be localized, but it will take some time; at the very least, a year from its initial Japanese release.

We’ll have to wait for the official confirmation from Square Enix in the future.
