The Classic Kamen Rider Black Is Getting A Reboot In 2022

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the long-running Japanese tokusatsu franchise Kamen Rider, Toei has announced a reboot to the classic 1987 Kamen Rider Black, which will be titled Kamen Rider Black Sun.

According to the official website, Kazuya Shiraishi will direct Kamen Rider Black Sun, while the show’s logo is designed by calligrapher Souun Takeda. Shiraishi is best known for Japanese movies like Kyoaku and The Blood Of Wolves.

In a statement, he said:

“The thought of being in charge of this amazing reboot of Kamen Rider Black gives me the shivers.

I’m going to need to rely on every bit of my skill to ensure I don’t get crushed by 50 years of Kamen Rider history.

I want the tragic story of Kohtaro Minami and Nobuhiko Akizuki to carve a new niche in the chronicles of Japanese heroes.

I plan on giving it my best, I hope everyone will see it!”

Kamen Rider Black was also notable for being one of the only series in the franchise to receive a direct sequel in the form of Kamen Rider Black RX. The latter was even adapted by Saban (the same studio behind the Power Rangers) into an American version.

Kamen Rider Black Sun is slated to launch sometime in spring 2022.

To celebrate this announcement, Toei has even made the first episode of Kamen Rider Black available to watch for free on YouTube. Check it out below:
