Here’s What I Want From A Rebranded Marvel vs Capcom Infinite
There are rumours abound involving Capcom changing up last year’s fighting game Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite, clearly a fan favourite for FGC folks everywhere since last year, and rebrand it as Marvel vs Capcom 4.
Let’s be a tad fair: MvCI had some good points overshadowed by some major flaws, namely its aesthetics, roster, and half-assed single-player mode. The wound is still too fresh, so Capcom should give it time until they revisit this brand. Here’s what I personally want from the rebranding that may happen in the next few years.
One mechanic that didn’t need fixing in MvCI was its 2v2 combat. The tag system and the Infinity Stones power-up system is fun, fair to a point, and makes for tense-filled and strategy-laced gameplay.
You pick one stone per camp, and you do your best with the combo you have. You use the power of the stone to amp up your combos or even confine your enemies in a small space, making them prone to your screen-covering attacks and Hyper Combos.
Give us the colourful and campy art style of MvC3, complete with the Comic Sans text and speech bubbles. Bring back the campy MvC2 music and MvC3 remixes. All of them. Make sure they’re done with utmost love and care. I remember “I Wanna Take You For A Ride” and this MvC3 main theme more than whatever the heck MvCI threw at us last year.
Make the MvC4 rebranding roster feel ginormous and insanely big. We have Captain Marvel, Venom, Black Widow, Sigma, and Monster Hunter in the mix. Surely you can do more than that, right Capcom and Marvel?
Bring in the old guard like Ruby Heart, Amingo, Son Son, Saki from Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Roll from Mega Man, and Batsu from Rival Schools. Add in other Capcom characters like Asura from Asura’s Wrath, Date Masamune from Sengoku Basara, and even Samanosuke from Onimusha.
Jesus, you have a lot of characters in your stable; pick up the slack and start rejuvenating your roster stat.
The X-Men were an integral part of Marvel’s involvement with Capcom. Without X-Men: Children of the Atom and X-Men vs Street Fighter, there wouldn’t be a Marvel vs Capcom to begin with.
With the Disney buyout more or less complete in a few months, there is really no excuse for Capcom and Disney not to put in X-Men characters in the rebranding.
Despite what many people say, I personally want the fun stuff from past MvC games to come back. Those nonsensical non-canon endings for Mike Haggar and Taskmaster back in MvC3 are nice little tidbits for fans of the game to adore and laugh at, because that’s what games with love are filled with: easter eggs galore.
Show that the game you’re making is from the heart, not from the obligatory commands of your shareholders. The latter was what made MvCI the way it was in the first place. Nobody asked for a half-assed story mode.
For the record, keep Ultron-Sigma. That hybrid boss is kinda cool.
Remember Heroes & Heralds for UMvC3, the mode where you build your army of superheroes to combat Galactus and his Heralds? That was all kinds of fun to play when you’re not in a competitive mood.
Capcom should take lessons from Bandai Namco; hell they should take lessons from their PS1 versions of Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Rival Schools and make a goddamn adventure game-slash-RPG minigame as a meaty side game for the next MvC game.
